To the Good and the Bad

Life can be crazy sometimes.

It can be at a moment impossibly good and horribly wrong at the next.

But actually, life does not only tip to one side of the scale... is a balance between the good things and the bad things.

It is through the bad things that we learn and the good things are the ones pushing us forward.
Wherever we may be and whoever we may become, we are shaped by the events in our lives.
These events transform us into the person we are today.

And yet, we are not alone in this. That's why we have people to back us up, be the support, the enemy, the people who care and we would care for.

Things...happen for a reason. Whether it may be devastating or entirely uplifiting, we should be thankful for it's another opportunity to grow and another 'challenge accepted' achieved. That is why raise your glasses (or hands) and cheers to not only the goods but also the bads in life.

Love Me? Hate Me? I Don't Care: Gone Girl Book Review

Gone GirlGone Girl by Gillian Flynn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Freakin' hell.

Suspense and mystery books are my favorite genres and I must say, this book has me hooked.
I love Jeffery Deaver and this fits the category of suspense that Deaver's books has given me. This book, however, has magnified something more: psychotic tendencies.

The story is about a couple: Nick and Amy Dunne. Both are married for five years. At the day of their fifth anniversary, Amy disappears; leaving the world to think 'Where has she gone?' or 'Was she killed?' and with the latter question comes the follow-up 'Who killed her?'

Gone Girl has touched upon a lot of issues particularly in an individual's psyche. People has this tendency to conform themselves to the ideas people have of them especially if that idea tells them to mold themselves to be perfect. In another case, it can also be to escape that preconception of the person. The lengths done in order to ensure either of the cases presented above can go overboard depending on the elements in play all throughout the person's life. The consequences manifest itself in the person's way of thinking and in his/her actions.

Another thing presented in the book is self-gratification. In line with the former point above, when a person grasps the mold that has been presented to them all his/her life, he will do everything to fit that mold. Once he/she succeeds, he will feel gratified. If the mold is negative, self-fulfilling prophecy occurs as that person believes that he can do nothing to change the mold presented to him/her.

Personally, this book has creeped me out. The lengths people will do to achieve and pacify is quite scary. What makes this book get a 5-star rating from me is how it is written as well as the very plot itself. Seeing from both sides of the spouse has me confused on who to support and who to hate: on who's right from who's wrong. The story building up from the beginning right until the very end keeps its readers hooked and as for me? The time I reach the last page of the book, I feel like grabbing a pillow and placing it on my mouth as I scream. Why? Read the book and find out.

Recently, there are a lot, and I mean a LOT of singers flocking the internet site Youtube. Some may be so-so but there are those that no words of mine can really describe as of now. Two of my favorites are:
from youtube
Sam Tsui. A 24-year old American from Blue Bell who graduated from Yale University last 2011 with a degree in Classical Greek and was magna cum laude. Along with Kurt Schneider (which will be featured in this post as well later on), they produce covers such as their latest, Clarity originally by Zedd. They also produced originals such as Don't Want An Ending, Start Again and their latest, Me Without You. He also guested in several talk shows of Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres.

Madilyn Bailey. A 20-year old who came from Wisconsin. Madilyn, like Sam, has been covering famous songs such as Stay by Rihanna, Don't You Worry Child by the Swedish House Mafia and more. She also produced her original music such as her latest, Crescent of the Moon.

Part of Sam's success would have not been possible without this guy
Kurt Schneider. Kurt produced a lot of videos with Youtube singers Sam, Aimee Proal, Max Schneider and Christina Grimmie (and a lot more). Like Tsui, he graduated from Yale University and was also magna cum laude with a degree in mathematics. Coming also from Blue Bell, he went to the same high school as Sam. He also produced a mashup of Maroon 5's songs and Bruno Mars with singers Max Schneider and Victoria Justice and amassed millions of views.

These people are just some but are part of the most talented singers and producer on Youtube. Though they sang versions of the famous songs today, they do not mean to overthrow the original singers, as what commentators on their Youtube profiles had suggested. They have their own edge from the original singers that their subscribers found and came to love.

Advantages of Snagging That Guy/Girl

With Valentines nearing, people are quickly gunning up their courage and strategies to asking that person they like best out. When you get that much awaited and anticipated YES, fireworks explode and even before Valentines Day comes, you already got yourself a girlfriend/boyfriend. Congrats!

So, what is your advantage to those people who are celebrating their Valentines with their jammies, hoping to sleep the day off or those who will celebrate it with friends who have their own significant other?

Here are the advantages that you can brag about:
First, finally you do not belong to those people who are categorized under 'forever alone'.
After so many attempts, you finally get to snag that person you like. Hooray! From spending nights alone, you get someone to tag along with you to those events that being part of a couple is a requirement and have fun. Beats sitting at home watching movies or pigging out alone right?

Second, you finally get a person who does not begrudgingly hand out gifts to you and mind, you get to receive gifts every month! You do not have to say to the person you want this or that, that person, because he/she loves you so much, will give you gifts that though may not be included in your wishlist (sorry, he/she doesn't have the budget to buy you that Lamborghini Mercy yet), will give you things you would truly appreciate. Nice huh?

Lastly (for now), for girls, you get someone to carry your stuff for you! Yes, you are totally lugging your heavy baggage of a bag containing who knows what and who's better to ask than that guy who loves you so much he's willing to be your coat and bag hanger. Mind, he wouldn't complain and will even take care of your bag as if it's his!

For guys, you will be able to have new clothes without having to spend a dime thanks to your lovely ladies. Now, you don't have to dole out your gaming budget just because you're already out of inner wear or polos. Hooplah for you!

So, do you agree with the advantages above? Want to snag that guy/girl you've been dreaming of for sometime now?

Well, let me tell you this.

Yea, I already can see your indignation with regards to what I've said. Who knows, maybe you're already calling that person up until you saw the largest line above. But seriously, you're going to jump into a relationship just because of those reasons. Believe me, you think you're inlove? YOU'RE NOT.

Real love doesn't work like that. Loving/ being in a relationship with a person does not mean that you use him/her for your benefit. They are not objects, you know! just because they are willing to do stuff for you does not also mean that you can abuse them. Another point is that you love a person not only because of their good qualities (may it be physical or their characteristics) but the person him/herself. A professor of mine once told us that for instance, if you take away that person's good looks or his capabilities and you still like him, then that's love. The bottomline is that love the person for who he.she truly is that even when you take those qualities off him/her, you still love the person.

Lastly, there is a reason why the quote "If you love them, set them free." was made. Loving a person entails sacrifice. If you want what's best for the person, sometimes you got to let them go. A good example of this is a child getting married. Though the parents may want for their child to stay with them forever, they can't tie the child up because he has the freedom to go and build his own family. Knowing what's good for them gives you the push you need to let go. When you let go, you give each other the chance to mature. When the time comes and you found someone and the reasons above are not your primary ones in courting/answering the person, then go ahead and go for it!

Book Review: Slammed

A. Facts About the Book

Title: Slammed
Author: Colleen Hoover
edition language: English
Genre: Young Adult, Romance
Series: Slammed #1
Next Book: Point of Retreat (Slammed #2)
B. Summary
Summary from Goodreads
Following the unexpected death of her father, 18-year-old Layken is forced to be the rock for both her mother and younger brother. Outwardly, she appears resilient and tenacious, but inwardly, she's losing hope.
Enter Will Cooper: The attractive, 21-year-old new neighbor with an intriguing passion for slam poetry and a unique sense of humor. Within days of their introduction, Will and Layken form an intense emotional connection, leaving Layken with a renewed sense of hope.
Not long after an intense, heart-stopping first date, they are slammed to the core when a shocking revelation forces their new relationship to a sudden halt. Daily interactions become impossibly painful as they struggle to find a balance between the feelings that pull them together, and the secret that keeps them apart.
C. Reader's thoughts:
  • The twists of the book was timed unexpectedly that I never even thought of that kind of twist to this novel.
  • Each characters were given time to grow throughout the novel. They have their own distinct characteristics that set them from one another.
  • The romance builds up throughout the entire book and not immediately, giving the readers the time to digest the development of their feelings.
  • The use of poetry in the book made it interesting as well. The insertion of poetry in certain scenes in the book helped the storyline as it helped the readers feel the emotions of the characters in the book.
  • May not cater to all ages
  • Quite a cliffhanger (that's why there's a second book!)
Slammed is a book that will let you appreciate poetry. Being a person that really doesn't like poetry that much, Slammed made me appreciate it more. With its nicely-written plot, a lot will be able to relate to it, particularly teens. This book talks about the only thing that's stopping you from making the most out of your life, is yourself

“Push your boundaries, that's what they're there for.”

“Life wants you to fight it. Learn how to make it your own.
“Life happens. Shit happens. And it happens a lot. To a lot of people.”
